During the Corona period, the Office Suite ONLYOFFICE was made available in the tubCloud for all members of the university. In addition to the direct editing of Office documents from the tubCloud in the browser, ONLYOFFICE primarily provides a way to collaboratively edit documents in the browser without installing any additional software.
ONLYOFFICE is purchased by TU Berlin from Nextcloud GmbH in order to have one-stop support for the complete tubCloud. Nextcloud GmbH acquires the licenses for ONLYOFFICE from ASCENSIO SYSTEM LIMITED in London or Ascensio System in Latvia (also post-Brexit EU). Therefore, it has only recently become clear to us that there is a Russian company (Rk-Technology Jsc) or a Russian businessman (Lev Bannov) behind ONLYOFFICE.
For this reason ONLYOFFICE falls under the sanctions of the EU and Germany against Russia, which have been imposed since the war against Ukraine.TU Berlin has therefore decided to immediately cease all business relations with ONLYOFFICE and switch to an alternative. The software Collabora offers an almost identical range of functions (joint editing of documents), including joint editing in the browser without further installation of software. In terms of compatibility with MS Office documents, the two products are also comparable. Behind Collabora is a large, globally active and diverse open source community and a British/Canadian company.
We have compiled a comparison of the products on our homepage: "Collabora". A revised version of the data protection handling (now from Collabora) is available at the known link "Umgang mit Metadaten in Collabora".
The switchover will take place during the week of May 15 - 17. The switchover will occur in a few minutes and, as planned, will not result in a tubCloud shutdown or other restrictions. As a user of the service, you do not need to do anything from your side. All documents will be preserved.
If you have any questions or problems, please contact the ZECM Service Desk as usual.
