Construction Economics and Construction Management

Courses offered by the Department of Construction Economics and Construction Management

The department's teaching in the areas of construction economics and construction management is oriented towards innovative approaches and the development of new implementation strategies of construction projects as well as methods and tools in the construction industry.

Construction economics deals with the fundamental structures of the 'construction industry' as well as the organization of economic activity in construction, i.e. the handling of limited resources and, as a tendency, unlimited needs. In addition to the structural and procedural organization of construction projects, this also includes project management tools as well as methods of cost planning, scheduling and risk management.

'Construction Manegement' is the abbreviated name for the part of industrial management that deals with all construction management issues, in particular with corporate management and construction execution. This includes procedural problems of construction, project management and all issues related to the economics of construction. Construction operations, construction management and construction management economics are thus a subfield of special business administration. Construction management deals with procedures for planning, controlling and optimizing the technical and economic interrelationships in a construction company or a construction business.

Note on modules in the master's degree

  • * The modules Bauobjektmanagement (BOM) and Bauprojektmanagement III (BPM III) take place alternately, i.e. every two years.
  • The modules Bauprojektmanagement I to III (BPM I to BPM III) can be heard and completed in any order.
  • In the M.Sc. Civil Engineering program, one student research project for 6 ECTS must be completed for each specilazation. These are to be planned flexibly in terms of time during the course of study.
  • Usually, the master's thesis is to be written in the last semester. In the M.Sc. Civil Engineering program, the master's thesis counts for 30 ECTS; M.Sc. Industrial Engineering 24 ECTS; M.Sc. Civil Engineering (teacher training) 15 ECTS.
