Material flow model for insulation materials

Call for support for a research task - everyone can help

We are urgently looking for floor plans of single-family houses, apartment buildings or even non-residential buildings (surgeries, office buildings, public facilities, etc.) with the aim of creating a forecast model for future insulation waste volumes. Obtaining the data is extremely difficult, as only the rightful owners of the plans - i.e. the owner of a building - are allowed to send us these plans.  We appreciate any and all support!

 

Backround

According to the Federal Statistical Office [1], more than 50 mass percent of the waste generated in Germany is caused by construction and demolition waste. In the coming years, a rapid increase in the amount of demolition waste generated from insulation materials is to be expected. Today, most insulation materials are usually not recycled, but incinerated or landfilled. 

In two completed research projects on the recycling of mineral wool insulation materials - LifeCycleKMF and RemeltingMiwo - we were able to work out that the transport costs of the insulation materials will become a significant factor for the feasibility of recycling strategies, both ecologically and especially economically. For this reason, a reliable forecast model for future insulation waste volumes is of great importance for the sustainable handling of deconstructed insulation materials.

Nevertheless, there are currently no promising approaches that make it possible to estimate when and how much insulation material will be generated. At the Department of Building Physics, we want to develop a geo-referenced, scientifically sound method with a bottom-up/top-down approach to be able to forecast future insulation material flows.

 

How you can help concretly

If you have floor plans and sections of one or more buildings, you are very welcome to make them available to us for research purposes.

The plans or other documents
- can be copies or photographs of old plans or digital plans. 
- should ideally be dimensioned and contain details of the insulation materials used. 
- should contain information on the location, approximate age and, if applicable, the last major renovation during which insulation work was carried out. 
- can be supplemented with information by you. 

The plans will be stored on servers at the TU Berlin in Germany for the duration of the research work and then deleted. They will not be used for any other purpose, will not be reproduced and will not be published. All data will be included anonymously in the model. If you wish, we will be happy to send you back the evaluation of your building. Simply indicate this wish when you hand it over.
