Photonic Quantum Reservoir Computing

The overall goal of the PhotonicQRC project is to realise photonic quantum reservoir computing (QRC), which operates as a fully functional neural network (NN) using quantum physics. In doing so, the use of advantages unique to photonics enables scalable parallelism. While this feature is essential for implementing network-based computing, the quantum hardware gives the NN the exponential dimensionality of a Hilbert space. PhotonicQRC will strengthen the role of France and Germany in the global landscape in novel quantum computing by (1) developing quantum NN architectures optimized for photonic hardware, (2) providing a fundamental understanding of the perspectives and constraints of QRC based on comprehensive theoretical investigations, taking into account technological and experimental imperfections, considering photonic hardware platforms, (3) extending quantum computing (QC) hardware by demonstrating the uniquely hardware-friendly concept of reservoir computing (RC) in a novel quantum context, and (4) introducing benchmark evaluations and tests to demonstrate the quantum advantage for RC.
