Award for Sustainability

"National Prize – Education for Sustainable Development" for KORN-SCOUT Educational Project at TU Berlin

The project KORN-SCOUT at Technische Universität Berlin is one of the newest recipients of the "Education for Sustainable Development" prize (BNE) awarded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Commission for UNESCO.

Within UNESCO's "BNE 2030" program, the BMBF and German Commission for UNESCO honor initiatives which promote the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and enable people to effect change. The prize is awarded to applicants with high-quality educational offerings who demonstrate effective and forward-looking commitment with a far-reaching impact on sustainable development. A total of 29 initiatives and projects from across Germany were honored this year on 10 December.

KORN-SCOUT (or GRAIN SCOUT in English) is a professional educational project focusing on those professions which process traditional grains, such as millers, bakers, confectioners, and brewers/maltsters. The joint project aims to strengthen grain competences for sustainability in food trade as well as contribute to sustainable operations in the everyday work of these professions.

Ultimately, it hopes to equip trainees to become agents of change. It is especially focused on developing communication about sustainability between every actor along the supply chain so that they increase their grain competences and can drive change towards sustainability. Several innovative teaching and learning materials for "grain scouts" were developed and tested by the joint project partners in cooperation with praxis partners. These were then provided as open educational resources.

The project, funded from April 2018 to October 2021 by the BMBF, was coordinated by the TU Berlin Chair of Education for Sustainable Nutrition and Food Science. Project partners included the Wuppertal Institute's Division of Sustainable Production and Consumption (WI), the Institute for Future Studies and Technology Assessment (IZT), and EPIZ e.V., Center for Global Citizenship Education.
