German Intensive Language Course for International Doctoral Candidates and Postdocs

Dear international Doctoral Candidates and Postdocs of TU Berlin,

Maybe you have just arrived in Germany and really have no clue about the German language? Or perhaps you are surrounded by English-speaking colleagues and simply can't improve your skills in German?
Then we, the Center for Junior Scholars, are pleased to offer you two different two-week intensive German language courses this year together with ZEMS, specifically designed for you.

The courses will be held from October 9-20, 2023, from Mon-Fri 9:30-13:00, Wednesdays from 14:00-17:30, in the classrooms of ZEMS, Hardenbergstraße 16-18.

With 80 percent attendance, the courses can be completed with an exam and you will receive a certificate of attendance.

Fees
TU members pay 120 € for the two-week course. In case of financial hardship, you can apply for funding with the CJS.

Course 1 & 2 - Description

Course 1
Name:
Deutsch A1.1
Requirements: none - for zero beginners

Course description
In the A1.1 course you will learn the basics of German in a compact and practical way. This will help you to cope better with your work at the university, establish social contacts and prepare you for many everyday situations.

or Course 2
Name: Deutsch für Promovierende (B1+)
Requirements: Completed B1

Course description
In this course you will get language skills you need around your doctorate: you will practice participating in discussions and meetings, planning in a team, socializing, and giving presentations. You will deal with standards for formal emails and letters, discuss dos and don'ts in the profession, and cultural standards such as formal and informal address. You will also train to give a brief overview of your research area and current work.

 

Application

Interested candidates send their application with the following documents to info(at)cjs.tu-berlin.de:

  • Mail with subject „Anmeldung Intensivsprachkurs“
  • Proof of registration as a doctoral candidate at the faculty (Anmeldung der Promotionsabsicht), if applicable (please note, this is not the enrollment certificate)
  • Enrollment certificate, if applicable (if you do not have a working contract with TU but are a doctoral candidate, either self funded or with a scholarship, enrollment is mandatory)
  • For doctoral candidates and postdocs: Approval of TU supervisor/professor for the permission to participate (as a simple mail to us). He/she should state, that you won't have any working obligations during the time of the course.
  • For the B1+-course: screenshot of the placement test: To see which course you are suited for, you can take the placement test German as a Foreign Language (DaF) once. In case of technical problems contact daf(at)zems.tu-berlin.de.

 

CJS funding in case of financial hardship

In addition, there is the possibility to apply to the CJS for coverage of fees - a personal contribution of 40 € is however still foreseen.
Interested candidates send their application with the following documents to info(at)cjs.tu-berlin.de.

  • A short explanation letter of no more than half a page explaining why you should be selected for a scholarship for the intensive language course and a confirmation that you will pay for the €40 co-payment.
  • Proof of registration as a doctoral candidate at the faculty (Anmeldung der Promotionsabsicht), if applicable
  • Enrollment certificate, if applicable
  • For doctoral candidates: Approval of TU supervisor for the permission to participate (as a document or mail to us)
  • For the B1+-course screenshot of the placement test: To see which course you are suited for, you can take the placement test German as a Foreign Language (DaF) once. In case of technical problems contact daf(at)zems.tu-berlin.de.
