ProfileMy research focuses on the development of a new continuous fiber reinforced additive manufacturing process. Specifically, the process utilizes carbon fibers pre-impregnated with an epoxy resin to increase the mechanical properties of the resulting parts. Compared to current state of the art materials used in fused filament fabrication processes, the use of pre-impregnated carbon fibers leads to increased strength, stiffness, and durability. The idea is that movable objects require energy to move, and reducing the weight of these objects can lead to significant energy savings. For example, in the automotive industry, lightweight materials are used to achieve higher speeds and better fuel efficiency. Similarly, in robotics, lightweight components allow for faster movement and higher production rates. In our research, we aim to demonstrate the advantages of using lightweight materials for additive manufacturing of movable parts, and how pre-impregnated carbon fibers can be used to achieve superior mechanical properties.
