Sensors in single-use bioreactors require special features like suitable connectors, or, if used directly in bags, they need to be cheap or hybrid sensors with a reusable and a single-use part have to be applied. Furthermore, special requirements concerning shape and weight have to be met if used in rocking-motion bioreactors.
We are collaborating with sensor companies to make probes applicable to such single-use reactors. In addition, post data treatment is applied to remove signal noise, which appears in shaken bioreactors and shake flasks to make on line monitoring available for a wide range of bioreactor and flask designs for multiple micorbial and cell-line processes. Specific requirements for continuous operation are considered to increase monitoring and control capacities in such processes as well.
