Monitoring and control of mixed and co- cultures

Co- and mixed cultures possess a huge potential for a cheaper bioproduction with feedstock flexibility, can support industrial production of otherwise not easily accessible products and can synthesis so far unknown natural components.

We aim for the investigation of co- and mixed cultures through monitoring of distinguishing features, in particular the morphology of microorganisms. This allows for a better understanding of the interaction of different species, and in general bioprocess development and control.

Examples for the application are co-cultures for phosphor fixation, fungi and algae (lichens) as well as lactic acid bacteria and yeasts (Kefir). Recently, a co-culture of a filamentous fungus and bacteria and its evolvement under different shear regimes is examined.
