The Acoustics of Room Transitions
(Dr. Thomas McKenzie, University of Edinburgh)
Have you ever walked from a busy street into a large hall and heard the street disappear behind you as you are enveloped by the spacious reverberation of the hall? This talk will investigate the auditory experience of moving from one room to another. Firstly, tests are conducted to understand how people perceive the position of the boundary (aperture) between two rooms using only the auditory senses. Then, through measurements and subsequent analysis, a physics-based understanding of the sound propagation is made. Finally, the talk shows how the transition between two rooms can be captured and reproduced using spatial audio for six degrees-of-freedom virtual reality, before asking how accurate does this reproduction need to be for human listeners?
